Biocomposites are materials whose structure is partly natural in origin. Whether they are produced naturally or synthetically, they embrace all materials containing to a greater or lesser extent polysaccharide fibres(cellulose, chitin) or natural polymers combined with an organic (plastic) or inorganic (cement) matrix. Ideally, this matrix should be manufactured from renewable resources. Cellulosed composites range from straw-reinforced clay to plastics (synthetic or natural) containing plantfibres. Composites are used to provide, through the combination of anumber of materials, a synergistic effect allowing for the development of new materials that offer better properties than the original components.
